What is Sa'ee?
Sa’ee is the act of walking between the two hillocks of Safa and Marwa and is a Wajib component of Umrah. It is performed after Tawaf. Sa’ee consists of walking seven times between Safa and Marwa, beginning at Safa and ending at Marwa. The area where Sa’ee is performed is called the Mas’aa. إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ “Surely, Ṣafā and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.” Surah al-Baqarah (2:158).

Let's begin
On approaching the Mas'aa area, recite: إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ | Innaṣ-Ṣafā wal-Marwata min sha‘ā’irillāh | “Surely, Ṣafā and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.”
Start at Safa ensuring one is standing on the hillock or nearabouts.
Face the Qibla and say:
الله أكبر، لا إله إلا الله
Allāhu akbar, lā ilāha illā Allāh | Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah.
One should then make Du'a. It is sunnah to recite the following:
Start at Safa
Walk towards Marwa
Men should jog, if you can, from the start of the green light to its end.
Women will walk between green lights.
One round is completed when you reach Marwa.
At Marwa, face towards the Qibla, say:
الله أكبر، لا إله إلا الله
Allāhu akbar, lā ilāha illā Allāh
Make the first set of Du'as or any of your choice.
The 2nd round begins from Marwa.
Repeat this until you finish the 7th round, which will be at Marwa.
Finish with Du'a.
Proceed to cut your hair.
It is not necessary to have Wudhu when performing Sa'ee.
If Salah starts or one needs to take a break e.g. for toilet, or drink water etc, it is permissible to continue from where one paused.
Women can continue to perform Sa'ee, even if you've began your menses.
One should engage in Dhikr and Du'a.
Men; do not sprint between the green lights, a jog is fine.
Be mindful of people praying or taking their time in Sa'ee.
Spiritual Dimensions of Sa'ee
As you walk between Safa and Marwah, remember the struggle of Hajar (ʿalayhā al-salām), who ran back and forth in the empty desert searching for water. From her sincere effort came the blessing of Zamzam, a mercy that continues to nourish millions. In the same way, think about the efforts you can make to renew your faith and transform your life. With every step, hope for Allah’s mercy and blessings to flow into your own Sa’ee.
