Halq (Shaving the head)
Taqsir (Cutting the hair)
What is Halq/Taqsir?
Cutting the hair to come out of the state of Ihram.
Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved.” The people said, “O Allah’s Messenger ﷺ! And (invoke Allah for) those who get their hair cut short.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved.” The people said, “O Allah’s Messenger ﷺ! And those who get their hair cut short.” The Prophet ﷺ said (the third time), “And to those who get their hair cut short.” Nafi said that the Prophet ﷺ had said once or twice, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who get their head shaved,” and on the fourth time he added, “And to those who have their hair cut short.” [Narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari]
Shaving is better than trimming.
It is permissible to cut one's own hair or to go to the barbers.
You must only snip a fingertip’s length, i.e. about an inch from the end of your hair.
This can be done by yourself.
It is Wajib.
Clipping at least an inch of hair across the majority of the head.
If hair is less than 1 inch, the head must be shaved.
If you do not have hair, you can pass a blade over your head.
Ensure the barber uses a fresh blade (most of the time they do).
Women should cut their hair in the hotel room.
It is handy to keep a small pair of scissors.
Do not get your hair cut by random people on the streets.
Women in particular should not expose your hair to non-Mahrams.
Spiritual Dimensions of cutting the hair
Shaving or trimming the hair at the end of Umrah is not just an outward act. It is a symbol of humility, submission, and renewal. Just as the hair is removed, we pray that our sins are removed, leaving us purified. “Shaving the head is an act of humility and obedience. Just as hair falls, so too should sins and arrogance fall away.” (Zād al-Maʿād)
Once a person cuts their hair, they are free from the laws of Ihram and the Umrah is complete. May Allah accept it, Aameen.
